115.1: The 27 Nakshatras or Lunar Mansions as States of Consciousness

To understand the Nakshatra-sequence, let’s look at its building-blocks, the three gunas. The three gunas are the three basic aspects of Manifestation, and are described as Sattva or coalescence, Rajas or rotation, and Tamas or dissolution. In our understanding of the Vedic tradition the three gunas are personified as the trimurti or trinity of Indra (later Vishnu) as Blue Sattva, Brahma as Yellow Rajas, and Rudra (later Shiva) as Red Tamas. In other mystery traditions Indra-Vishnu is Matter-Mother, Brahma is the Soul-Child, and Rudra-Shiva is Spirit-Father.

Operating together, the three gunas appear as a spindle-Torus, like a magnetic field, consisting of a sphere with north and south poles opening inward like whirlpools to form a double cone meeting in a single point at the center. On the Torus we see a coalescence of matter moving, say, down from the equator of the Torus’s spherical surface and gathering in near the south pole at the “Antarctic circle” as a kind of “black hole” which contracts up inside the central cone into the core spindle, rotating into a singularity-star or light-point at the Torus’s center, and then upwelling into a kind of “white hole” as it pours up the spindle’s expanding cone to spread out near the north pole at the “Arctic circle” as energy, then flowing out and down the outer surface again to the equator, and so on. The “black hole” is the Coalescence-cone or Blue Mountain of Indra or Vishnu, known as Mt. Meru or as Vaikuntha. The “white hole” is the Dissolution-cone or Red Mountain of Rudra or Shiva, known as Kailasha. The rotating light center, Brahmaloka, also emits light-spokes or rays curving out along the horizontal plane to the Torus’s equator like the spiral arms of a galaxy. Over time, the rotation actually switches back and forth to create crisscrossing spirals, like the seeds of a sunflower’s whorls.

The Torus as a whole shows us Einstein’s Theory of Relativity, where Energy or dissolution – the white hole – is equivalent to Matter or coalescence – the black hole – operated upon by Light times itself (crisscrossing arcs back and forth). We can also say Ananda, or Bliss-Laughter-Dissolution, is equal to Sat, or Love-Being-Coalescence, transformed through Chit, Light-Consciousness-Rotation, aware of itself. Or we can say Spirit (Energy) is Body (Matter) transforming through the self-aware Soul (Light squared). Psychologically, when we accept something by surrendering into Unconditional Love (black hole of Coalescence unimpeded), what appeared to be a painful obstacle (not-Self, Matter) becomes radiant with the Light of the Self and merges into the Self (Consciousness aware of itself, rotating onto itself; Light of the Soul squared), releasing the old form into the Laughter of pure Bliss (white hole of dissolution into Energy).

What appears to be a single sphere or Egg, therefore, is resolvable into a Trinity of elements: coalescence, awareness, and dissolution. Each of these elements may also contain three elements: thus within coalescence are the beginnings or coalescence of coalescence, followed by the establishment or self-awareness of coalescence, followed by the completion or dissolution of coalescence, as it moves into the beginnings or coalescence of light-awareness, and so on. We can thus imagine the three gunas or elements of a sphere as themselves being three elemental spheres or Eggs, each with its own three sub-elemental gunas, for a total of nine sub-elements or sub-gunas, which themselves are also nine spheres with a total of 27 sub-sub-elements or sub-sub-gunas, and so on. The Nakshatras are the 27 sub-sub-elemental modifications of the sub-elemental nine modifications of the three elemental gunas. These 27 sub-sub-gunas or sub-sub-elemental Eggs can be seen as arranged like pearls in a necklace, or beads on an abacus-wire, and can be clustered into nine sub-elemental groups of three Eggs each – we could call each of these sub-guna or sub-elemental three-Egg clusters a Great (Sanskrit: Maha) Egg – and as three guna or elemental clusters of nine Eggs each, calling each elemental or guna nine-Egg cluster a Supreme (Sanskrit: Para) Egg.

The number of each Nakshatra is expressed in base-three or trinary code with each digit being one of three possible numbers: 0, 1, and 2. 0 is the guna of Sattva personified as Indra and expressed as Sat or coalescence of Love and Being; 1 is the guna of Rajas personified as Brahma and expressed as Chit or rotation of Light and Consciousness, and 2 is the guna of Tamas personified as Rudra and expressed as Ananda or dissolution of Laughter and Bliss. The trinary-code digits of each Nakshatra are arranged in a trigram or three-digit number, consisting of a digit (0, 1, or 2) in each of three columns. The rightmost digit is in the ones or sub-sub-guna column; the middle digit is in the threes or sub-guna, the Great (Maha) column; and the leftmost digit is in the nines or guna, the Supreme (Para) column. Thus, as an example, Nakshatra number 5 would be 0-1-2: 0 in the nines column, 1 in the threes column, and 2 in the ones column: (0×9) + (1×3) + (2×1) = 5. 0-1-2 is Parasattva-Maharajas-Tamas, personified by Parendra (Para+Indra)-Mahabrahma-Rudra, expressing Parasat-Mahachit-Ananda.
