115.1: The Immortal Wisdom of Thoth-Hermes: the 27 Lunar Mansions as Initiations

This Lunar knowledge is Hermetic, pertaining to Hermes; it is the immortal wisdom of Thoth-Hermes. Ancient Egyptians personified the moon as Tahuti or Thoth, who was the “son of Horus,” or Her-Mes. Much of the ancient wisdom remains in Hinduism, whose Sanskrit terms for the three gunas or eternal building-blocks of Wholeness are: Sattva for “Cardinal” Creation, Rajas for “Fixed” Maintenance, and Tamas for “Mutable” Dissolution. The gunas describe both Matter’s ascent through Light into Energy, and Energy’s manifestation through Light into Matter. Subjectively, Sattva-Rajas-Tamas are Sat-Chit-Ananda: Being-Consciousness-Bliss, or Love-Light-Laughter. The gunas map both our Body’s ascent through Soul to Spirit, celebrated in the earthy or watery “feminine” months (Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn, and Pisces), and our Spirit’s manifestation through Soul into Body, celebrated in the airy or fiery “masculine” months (Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius, Aquarius, and Aries).

The gunas’ rhythmic progression unfolds the entire span of human potential, from loving conception to blissful dissolution, in a sequence of 27 base-three trigrams corresponding to the 27 Lunar mansions or Hindu Nakshatras: one for each day of the moon’s monthly journey through the zodiac, waxing from the dark New Moon to the Full Moon and waning back again to New. (The moon actually takes 27.32 days to complete its sidereal or orbital period through the zodiac, so some systems posit 28 asterisms; we do not. The synodic period — e.g. from New Moon to New Moon — actually takes 29.53 days, making a disparity between the two cycles of 2-3 days, which we may place in the gap in the dark of the New Moon between the end of one month and the start of the next.) Similarly, the New Testament finally comprised 27 books as organized in 367 CE by Athanasius, Bishop of Alexandria, Egypt. Athanasius upheld Christianity’s Ancient Egyptian doctrines of the Trinity and the co-substantiality of God the Father and God the Son, and perhaps was also encoding Hermetic knowledge in organizing the New Testament. If so, the order seems to have been rearranged as evinced by the Gospels’ Four Evangelists’ zodiacal symbols and their fixed stars.

Here concisely is the immortal wisdom showing the flow of the gunas through the 27 Lunar Mansions of evolution as comprising nine Initiations of Being (or Humanity), nine Initiations of Consciousness (or Hierarchy), and nine Initiations of Bliss (or Shambhala): one Initiation for each day of the month. We are not truly “in” any of them, as we contain them all simultaneously, here and now. None of them is permanent, and they may not always be appreciated in the sequential order given here. From one point of view, all unfolds simultaneously from the central eternal Now into the past and future: We embrace the first and the last from the central Full Moon of the Inner Christ, Buddha, or enlightened Brahman Consciousness, the central 1-1-1 or Light-Light-Light of VISHAKHA or Wesak. (In-depth commentary appears below, followed by a more detailed analysis of each Nakshatra.)

This Primordial Moon Calendar governs the nine states each of Love (Being), Light (Consciousness), and Laughter (Bliss). The states arise in sequence as a gradual dance from union to separation, reunion, and reseparation of our “Relative” earthly Mother of Matter (Egyptian Iaset/Isis or Mut, Hindu Shakti or Mata) — reflected in the Yin geomagnetic earth-currents — with our “Absolute” heavenly Father of Spirit (Egyptian Ausar/Osiris or Amen, Hindu Shiva) — reflected in the Yang Schumann Resonance between the earth’s surface and the ionosphere — through our nine chakras, and they celebrate the resultant conception, birth, death, and resurrection of their radiant Soul-Child, our Solar Angel or Inner Christ (Egyptian Horus or Khonsu, Hindu Murugan or Skanda). As Father and Mother end a month in complete separation engendering a full-grown resurrected Solar Child between them, and they begin the next month in complete union to conceive a Solar Child, the New-Moon gap between the months apparently holds nine interior, hidden, or timeless states of reunion required to begin the new month. We outline the progress of Spirit-Father, Matter-Mother, and Soul-Child through our nine chakras in our detailed treatment of each Nakshatra below.

The Lunar wisdom follows the progress of the moon from the new moon’s Conception on the eastern horizon at the spring equinox to the full moon’s Brahman Consciousness on the western horizon of the fall equinox, and back again. Brahman Consciousness, the surrender of the separate Soul into eternal perfection at the reunion or crossing of Father-Spirit (the upper realm) and Mother-Matter (the lower realm) at the Full Moon, is known in Egypt as Sema, Unity, and Sema-taui, the union of the upper and lower realms; and in India as Soma, the immortal Brahmanic light-drink of the Moon, and Samadhi, Unity. In Buddhism it is nirvana, the blowing out of the separate flame in enlightenment, and in Christianity it is the crossing or crucifixion of the Inner Christ or Solar Angel, when the veil separating the Holy of Holies is torn open. The Lunar calendar can be useful in understanding the apparent milestones or Initiations on the path in all religions, and the relationship between eternity and personal evolution.

The number of each Nakshatra or state is expressed in base-three or trinary, with each digit being one of three possible numbers: 0, 1, and 2. 0 is the guna of Sattva, personified in Ascension as Mut-Iaset/Isis or Mata-Shakti and in Manifestation as Amen-Ausar/Osiris or Shiva, and expressed as Sat or centripetal coalescence of Love and Being; 1 is the guna of Rajas, personified in both Ascension and Manifestation as Khonsu-Horus or Skanda-Murugan and expressed as Chit or rotation of Light and Consciousness; and 2 is the guna of Tamas, personified in Ascension as Amen-Ausar/Osiris or Shiva and in Manifestation as Mut-Isis or Mata-Shakti, and expressed as Ananda or centrifugal dissolution of Laughter and Bliss. (Later Hinduism follows the Manifestation pattern by personifying the gunas as Brahma the Creator, Indra-Vishnu the Preserver, and Mata or Rudra-Shiva as Destroyer, but ascribes Rajas to Brahma and Sattva to Indra-Vishnu.)

These three gunas make up a single sphere or Egg of Wholeness,or actually a spindle torus like an electromagnetic field. From an inwardly Ascending point of view, Sattva or Loving Being flows down our Egg or causal body from our gold-banded equator to coalesce as dense Matter in a whirlpool at our Feet, the “Lotus” on which we stand, then rotates up inside us as a conical black hole contracting into a singularity of Conscious Light at the radiant center-point of our Solar Plexus or Sacred Heart as Rajas, then dissolves in Blissful Energy as a conical white hole expanding up and out at our Crown or “1000-petaled Lotus” as Tamas, which then flows down the surface of our Egg back to our gold-banded equator. From an inwardly Manifesting point of view, Sattva coalesces as up from the gold-banded equator around us as Loving Energy into a whirlpool at our Crown, then down inside as a conical black hole contracting into the rotating central singularity of Conscious Light at our Solar Plexus or Sacred Heart as Rajas, then materializes in Blissful Matter as a conical white hole expanding down and out our Feet as Tamas, which flows up around our Egg to our gold-banded equator again. Either way, Sattva is the centripetal beginning of Love, Rajas is the rotary middle of Light, and Tamas is the centrifugal ending of Laughter. (For more on the Torus and the gunas, see Appendix.)

So what appears to be a single sphere or egg is resolvable into a trinity of elements: cardinal coalescence, fixed light or awareness, and mutable dissolution. Each of these elements may also contain three elements: Within coalescence are the its beginning, its middle, and its end as it moves into the beginning of fixity, and so on. So a sphere’s three gunas are themselves three spheres, each with its own three sub-gunas, and these nine sub-gunas can be further subdivided into 27 sub-sub-gunas. The Nakshatras are the 27 sub-sub-gunas of the nine sub-gunas of the three gunas. These 27 sub-sub-gunas can appear like pearls on a necklace, and can be clustered into nine groups of three eggs each – each three-egg cluster being a Triad or Great (Sanskrit Maha) Egg, the realm of the Great or Maha- form of the deity – or into three clusters of nine eggs each, each nine-egg cluster being an Ennead or Supreme (Sanskrit Para) Egg, the realm of the Greatest or Para- form of the personification.

The trinary-code digits of each Nakshatra are arranged in a trigram or three-digit number, consisting of a digit (0, 1, or 2) in each of three columns. The rightmost digit is in the ones or sub-sub-guna column; the middle digit is in the threes or sub-guna, the Great (Maha) column; and the leftmost digit is in the nines or guna, the Greatest or Supreme (Para) column. Thus, for example, Nakshatra number 5 would be 0-1-2: 0 in the nines column, 1 in the threes column, and 2 in the ones column: (0x9) + (1×3) + (2×1) = 5. 0-1-2 is Parasattva-Maharajas-Tamas, personified in Ascension by Greatest Mut-Great Khonsu-Amen or Parashakti-Mahaskanda-Shiva, and in Manifestation by Greatest Amen-Great Khonsu-Mut or Parashiva-Mahaskanda-Shakti, all expressing Parasat-Mahachit-Ananda. (However, we might for simplicity call 0-1-2 Sattva-Rajas-Tamas, personified in Ascension by Mut-Khonsu-Amen or Shakti-Skanda-Shiva, or in Manifestation by Amen-Khonsu-Mut or Shiva-Skanda-Shakti expressing Sat-Chit-Ananda.)

The 27 Nakshatras can be arrayed as a 27-point crystal lattice of Lunar Immortality. Our 27-point crystal could look like a 13-point VE Matrix (1 center-point, 12 vertices or surface points, 14 faces) interlocking with its complement, a 14-point rhombic dodecahedron (14 vertices or surface points, 12 faces), or a VE Matrix with a point centered in each of its 14 faces. But for a clearer understanding of the rhythmic relationships of the 27 states to each other, let’s imagine our crystal lattice as a 3 x 3 x 3-unit cube, like a three-dimensional tic-tac-toe game with three transparent 3 x 3 squares, one above the other, for the nine states of Being or Humanity (top or front layer), nine states of Consciousness or Hierarchy (middle layer), and nine states of Bliss or Shambhala (bottom or back layer). We can proceed in sequence as if reading a book in the West. Looking down from above, we begin at the front layer’s top-left corner and read from left to right across the top row, then middle, then bottom row. We then move to the middle layer’s top-left corner and continue left-to right and top to bottom before moving to the back layer’s top-left corner and proceeding likewise, finishing at the back’s bottom-right corner.

The cube lattice reveals correlations between the various Initiatory states of Being (Humanity) Consciousness (Hierarchy), and Bliss (Shambhala). For example, in the top row of the front layer, the first state of Conception (0-0-0, Sat-Sat-Sat) and Threshold Initiation of Humanity is directly above the state of Transcendental Consciousness (1-0-0, Chit-Sat-Sat) and Threshold Initiation of Hierarchy, while the second state of Prenatal Waking (0-0-1, Sat-Sat-Chit) and First Initiation of Humanity is directly above Cosmic Consciousness (1-0-1, Chit-Sat-Chit) and the First Initiation of Hierarchy, where one witnesses waking state; and the third state of Prenatal Dreaming (0-0-2, Sat-Sat-Ananda) and Second Initiation of Humanity is directly above God or Celestial Consciousness (1-0-2, Chit-Sat-Ananda) and the Second Initiation of Hierarchy, where one appreciates life as a dream. In the top layer’s middle row, the fourth state of Prenatal Sleep (0-1-0, Sat-Chit-Sat) and Third Initiation of Humanity is directly above Unity Consciousness (1-1-0, Chit-Chit-Sat) and Third Initiation of Hierachy, where one is aware even in deep sleep. The state of Loving Birth and Fourth Initiation of Humanity in the middle of the top layer (0-1-1), where our Solar Angel or Soul comes into being as our Father-Spirit and Mother-Matter separate, is intimately connected with Enlightened Brahman Consciousness and Fourth Initiation of Hierarchy just below in the middle of the middle layer (1-1-1), where our Solar Angel is crucified and eclipsed as a separate unit as our Father-Spirit and Mother-Matter reunite, and with Blissful Death and Fourth Initiation of Shambhala just below in the middle of the bottom layer (2-1-1), where our Solar Angel is resurrected as our Father-Spirit and Mother-Matter separate again.

Each asterism is 13.33 degrees of the 360-degree zodiacal circle, and so it also governs roughly 13.33 days of the solar year. Just as in the Taurus-Equinox Solar Calendar, we may begin the Lunar Calendar at 0 degrees Taurus, with the Nakshatra of Krittika. The first third of the zodiac comprises Mansions 1-9, the Ennead of Loving Being, which runs from the beginning of Taurus to the end of Leo and corresponds to the Eygptian season of Shemu, when the crops are harvested. Shemu means “Low Water,” when the land becomes most solid and dry, and its central Nakshatra is Loving Birth at Crescent Moon (Love-Light-Light), when one fully incarnates as a separate Soul or Solar Child in solid matter. The middle third comprises Mansions 10-18, the Ennead of Enlightened Consciousness, which runs from the beginning of Virgo to the end of Sagittarius and corresponds to the Egyptian season of Akhet, when the Nile floods. Akhet means “Horizon” or “Mountain of Light,” as a pyramid, and its central Nakshatra is Enlightened Brahman Consciousness at Full Moon (Light-Light-Light), the time of crossing or crucifixion of the Solar Child as the capstone of the pyramid at the Autumn Equinox and Western horizon. The last third comprises Mansions 19-27, the Ennead of Laughing Bliss, which runs from the beginning of Capricorn to the end of Aries and corresponds to the Egyptian season of Peret, when the fields are planted and grow to maturity. Peret means “Emergence,” and its central Nakshatra is Blissful Death at Waning Moon (Laughter-Light-Light), wherein the Solar Child re-emerges in resurrection.

The paired (Purva-Uttara) Nakshatras connect the last state of Loving Being in Shemu, Transcendental Being (Purva Phalguni) with the first state of Enlightened Consciousness in Akhet, Turiya or Transcendental Consciousness (Uttara Phalguni); and the last state of Enlightened Consciousness in Akhet, Mahaturiya or Post-Brahmanic Transcendental Consciousness (Purva Ashadha), with the first state of Laughing Bliss in Peret, Transcendental Bliss (Utttara Ashadha). Of the final paired Nakshatras, Purva Bhadrapada (“The former feet of the fortunate Death-Mount”) corresponds to Blissful Death, and Uttara Bhadrapada (“The latter feet of the fortunate Death-Mount”) corresponds to Post-Mortal Blissful Sleep immediately following.

Of special interest is the Nakshatra for the Full Moon of Brahman Consciousness, the Central Cross or midpoint of the whole sequence, the Eternal Now from which all the others appear to be projected into the past and future: Vishakha, also known as Vesak and Wesak, the Nakshatra in which the Full Moon marks the birth, enlightenment, and death of the Buddha. Here again, we see how the midpoint of Brahman or Full Enlightenment, Chit-Chit-Chit or Light-Light-Light (1-1-1), is the Now directly connected to both Loving Birth just above (0-1-1) and Blissful Death just below (2-1-1). In Ancient Egypt this is the time of the Opet Festival, appropriately celebrating the union of Father Amen and Mother Mut attended by their son Khonsu. The Opet Festival survives in Madurai, India as the festival of Puthandu or Chittirai, celebrating the marriage of Shiva and Meenakshi attended by their son Murugan. (See “Murugan-2,” V. In this Gap at the Eastern Horizon between the end of the Ennead of Bliss (of Ascension’s Greatest Amen or Parashiva and Manifestation’s Greatest Mut or Mahashakti) and the beginning of the Ennead of Love (of Ascension’s Greatest Mut or Parashakti and Manifestation’s Greatest Amen or Mahashiva), the virtual-gunas are Pararajas-Maharajas-Rajas, personified by Greatest Khonsu-Great-Khonsu-Khonsu — or the thrice-greatest Thoth-Her-mes, or Hermes Trismegistus — or Paraskanda-Mahaskanda-Skanda, representing Parachit-Mahachit-Chit: Consciousness-Consciousness-Consciousness, or Light-Light-Light.) As Khonsu is equivalent to Horus, this is also the place of Horus of the Cross of the Eastern Horizon, Heru-pa-khered or Harpocrates, Horus the Younger. After Dissolution and full separation of Shiva-Purusha or Father-Spirit and Shakti-Prakriti or Mother-Matter, within the Pleiades-Gap of the Now at the dark of the Moon, nine timeless, hidden, or interior non-Guna stages appear to effect the reuniting of Spirit-Father and Mother-Matter to prepare the Soul for Conception. These progressive stages would be:

This Nakshatra’s gunas are Parasattva-Mahasattva-Sattva, personified in Ascension (the Ascending or “feminine” months of Earth and Water) by Greatest Mut-Great Mut-Mut or Parashakti-Mahashakti-Shakti, and in Manifestation (the Manifesting or “masculine” months of Fire and Air) by Greatest Amen-Great Amen-Amen or Parashiva-Mahashiva-Shiva, expressing Parasat-Mahasat-Sat: Supreme Being—Great Being—Being, or Supreme Love—Great Love—Love.

This first Mansion in Coptic is Orias, in Arabic Al Thurayya, “The Many Little Ones,” and in Sanskrit Krittika, “The Cutters.” It is the Mansion of the star Eta Tauri or Alcyone, one of the Pleiades. It governs from the Spring Equinox, 0 degrees Taurus in the Taurus-Equinox (“T-E”) System, to 13 degrees 20 minutes T-E Taurus.

Krittika rules Loving Conception, the Sattvic coalescence of Love-Being within Great Love-Being within Supreme Love-Being. At Loving Conception, Amen-Osiris, Shiva-Purusha or Absolute Father-Spirit and Mut-Isis, Shakti-Prakriti or Relative Mother-Matter are completely fused, each occupying all nine chakras, from Crown to Feet. Conception is our primordial Alchemical Wedding, fully transcendental-spirit and fully elemental-matter simultaneously.

This state of Conception accompanies the Threshold Initiation of Humanity.

1 : 0-0-1 : ROHINI : LOVING PRENATAL WAKING

One in trinary is 0-0-1. This Nakshatra’s gunas are Parasattva-Mahasattva-Rajas, personified in Ascension by Greatest Mut-Great Mut-Khonsu or Parashakti-Mahashakti-Skanda, and in Manifestation by Greatest-Amen-Great Amen-Khonsu or Parashiva-Mahashiva-Skanda. The Nakshatra expresses Parasat-Mahasat-Chit: Supreme Being—Great Being—Consciousness, or Supreme Love—Great Love—Light.

This second Mansion in Coptic is Pi-Orion, in Arabic Al Dabaran, “The Follower,” and in Sanskrit Rohini, “The Red Cow.” It is the Mansion of the star Alpha Tauri or Aldebaran. It governs from 13 degrees 20 minutes T-E Taurus to 26 degrees 40 minutes T-E Taurus. Aldebaran is one of the four Royal Stars of the Fixed Cross; as the Bull or Ox, Rohini is ascribed to Gospel of the Evangelist Luke.

Rohini rules Loving Prenatal Waking, the Rajasic rotation of Light-Consciousness within Great Love-Being within Supreme Love-Being. In Prenatal Waking, Amen-Osiris or Shiva-Purusha our Absolute Father-Spirit withdraws upwards out of our Feet or Root Chakra to enliven our Base Chakra, and Mut-Isis, Shakti-Prakriti, or Relative Mother-Matter withdraws downwards out of the Crown Chakra to enliven the Brow or Third-Eye Chakra. All of the chakras except the transcendental extremes at Crown and Feet still enjoy the Unity or fusion of Amen, Shiva, or Father-Spirit and Mut, Shakti, or Mother-Matter.

Now in our Brow or Third-Eye as Avyakta, Mut-Shakti or Mother-Matter lovingly witnesses Amen-Shiva or Father-Spirit in the Base as the Karmendriyas or Organs of Action, giving a kind of lovingly unconscious awareness of activity in Prenatal Waking, not fully transcendental-spirit nor fully elemental-matter.

This state of Prenatal Waking accompanies the First Initiation of Humanity.

In this Gap at the Eastern Horizon between the end of the Ennead of Bliss (of Ascension’s Greatest Amen or Parashiva and Manifestation’s Greatest Mut or Mahashakti) and the beginning of the Ennead of Love (of Ascension’s Greatest Mut or Parashakti and Manifestation’s Greatest Amen or Mahashiva), the virtual-gunas are Pararajas-Maharajas-Rajas, personified by Greatest Khonsu-Great-Khonsu-Khonsu — or the thrice-greatest Thoth-Her-mes, or Hermes Trismegistus — or Paraskanda-Mahaskanda-Skanda, representing Parachit-Mahachit-Chit: Consciousness-Consciousness-Consciousness, or Light-Light-Light.) As Khonsu is equivalent to Horus, this is also the place of Horus of the Cross of the Eastern Horizon, Heru-pa-khered or Harpocrates, Horus the Younger. Appendix: The Torus and the Gunas

The Nakshatra-sequence’s building-blocks are the gunas, the three basic aspects of Creation described as Sattva or centripetal coalescence, Rajas or rotation, and Tamas or centrifugal dissolution. Operating together, the three gunas form a spindle-Torus like a magnetic field: a sphere with north and south poles pulling inward like whirlpools to form a double cone meeting in a point at the center. From the Torus’s equator a coalescence of matter moves, say, down and gathers in near the south pole as a black hole which contracts up inside the core spindle, rotating into a singularity-star or light-point at the Torus’s center, and then upwelling into a white hole as it pours up the spindle’s expanding cone to spread out near the north pole as energy, then flowing out and down the outer surface again to the equator, and so on.

If Creation is a Triple Goddess of Earth, Sattva is the White Maiden of the crescent moon (our Yellow-Green Enchantress of Virgo); Rajas is the Red Mother of the full moon (our Red-Orange High Priestess of Taurus); and Tamas is the Black Crone of the waning moon (our Blue-Violet Stone-cutter of Capricorn). Or we could use a Vedic triplicity of Fire: Sagittarius’s Blue Indra as Sattva, Leo’s Yellow Brahma as Rajas, and Aries’s Red Rudra as Tamas. From an interior or subjective viewpoint, the black hole is the Coalescence-cone or Blue Mountain of Indra or Vishnu, known as Mt. Meru or Vaikuntha, and the white hole is the Dissolution-cone or Red Mountain of Rudra or Shiva, known as Kailasha. Between the two cones or mountains is the innermost I AM singularity or rotating light center, Brahmaloka, which emits a cross of four light-spokes or rays curving out along the horizontal plane to the Torus’s equator like the spiral arms of a galaxy. Over time, the rotation actually switches back and forth to create crisscrossing spirals, like the seeds of a sunflower’s whorls.

The terms “Coalescence” and “Dissolution” are only relative. The black-hole Coalescence or creation or Sattva forming the interior singularity or subjective world is simultaneously also the Dissolution or Tamas of the exterior objective world, and the white-hole Dissolution or Tamas of the interior subjectivity is simultaneously the Coalescence or Sattva of exterior objectivity. From an objective viewpoint, the Mason is Indigo Sattva (as the Mason’s Capricorn is Cardinal, or Sattvic) and the Enchantress is Yellow-Green Tamas (as the Enchantress’ Virgo is Mutable, or Tamasic); Indra is Blue Tamas (as the Blue Planter’s Sagittarius is Mutable or Tamasic) and Rudra is Red Sattva (as the Red Hunter’s Aries is Cardinal or Sattvic). Seen entirely from outside space-time, neither “Coalescence” nor “Dissolution” is real, as they only describe apparent or relative flows around or through the torus, whereas in actuality only the torus itself is eternal.

The torus demonstrates Einstein’s Theory of Relativity, where Energy or dissolution – the subjective white hole – is equivalent to Mass or Matter or coalescence – the subjective black hole – operated upon by Light times itself: the singularity’s light-arcs criss-crossing back and forth. Ananda, or Bliss-Laughter-Dissolution, is equal to Sat, or Love-Being-Coalescence, transformed through Chit, Light-Consciousness-Rotation, aware of itself. Spirit (Energy) is Body (Matter) transforming through the self-aware Soul (Light squared). Psychologically, when we accept something by surrendering into Unconditional Love (black hole of Coalescence) in the dharana of Wavicle Work, what appeared to be a painful obstacle (not-Self, Matter) becomes radiant with the Light of the Self (Consciousness aware of itself, Light of the Soul squared) in the dhyana of Wavicle Work, and the old form dissolves into the Laughter of pure Bliss (white hole of dissolution into Energy) in the samadhi of Wavicle Work.
