110: The I Ching and the Rorian Tradition

The EIGHT I-CHING TRIGRAMS and the RORIAN CALENDAR
There are eight I Ching trigrams, representing the first eight numbers (0-7) in binary code (base two). If we assign the even numbers to our left foot and the odd numbers to our right foot, we attain the I Ching pattern merely by walking forward across the Wheel of the year, which we can imagine as a large map North-side down on the floor, or as a circular rug in front of us, with North and Winter Solstice nearest us, East and Spring Equinox ahead and to our left, West and Fall Equinox ahead and to our right, and South and Summer Solstice directly ahead at the far edge.

Zero (0-0-0): EARTH
We begin with our left foot at the bottom edge in the North at the Mid-Winter Solstice, the Celtic Alban Arthuan, between Taurus-Equinox (T-E) Capricorn and T-E Aquarius; ca. December 22-23. In the Rorian Calendar this corresponds to Vespers or Tenebrae, Midnight: according to Nigel Pennick (The Sacred World of the Celts), the Welsh Tide of Dewaint. Here we place zero, written with three broken lines (0-0-0). This is the trigram of EARTH (“K’un”). It is in the root or base chakra of the Divine Human, ruled by the Monad Sandalphon, our Divine Mother. Earth’s color is black.

One (0-0-1): THUNDER
Moving our right foot up and to the right, we place one in the Northwest at Mid-Hallows, 15 degrees T-E Sagittarius; ca. November 8-10. In the Rorian Calendar this corresponds to Nones, 9:00 P.M.: the Welsh Tide of Ucher. We write one as two broken lines above a solid line (0-0-1). This is the trigram of THUNDER (“Chen”), appropriate as T-E Sagittarius is the sign of Electric Fire, ruled by interregnal Jupiter/Jove or restoration Bacchus/Dionysos/Taranis: in either case the Lord of thunder, electric energy, fertility, and rapid vegetable growth. Sagittarius is the Archer, or the hurler of thunderbolts, and is the home of our Demiurge the Blue Planter. Thunder is traditionally considered to be a form of Divine insemination, bringing the sperm-like rain to make the earth fruitful, and T-E Sagittarius is the male sex center of the Divine Human. Thunder’s color is azure, electric blue or sky blue.

Two (0-1-0): DEEP
Moving our left foot up and to the left, across from our right foot, we place two in the Northeast at Mid-Imbolc, 15 degrees T-E Pisces; ca. February 5-7. In the Rorian Calendar this corresponds to Compline, 3:00 A.M.: the Welsh Tide of Pylgeint. We write two as a solid line between two broken lines (0-1-0). This is the trigram of the WATERY DEEP (“K’an”), appropriate as T-E Pisces is the sign of Magnetic Water, ruled by interregnal Neptune or restoration Uranus: in either case the Ruler of the oceanic depths. Pisces is the Fish, and the home of our Demiurge the Violet-Red Forester (Shipbuilder), who rules the depths of the oceans and the rainforests, magnetic energy, slow fertility and long-range vegetable growth. T-E Pisces is the female sex center of the Divine Human. The Watery Deep’s color is violet-red, or magenta.

Three (0-1-1): LAKE
Moving our right foot up and to the right, we place three in the West at Mid-Fall Equinox, the Celtic Alban Elved, between T-E Libra and T-E Scorpio; ca. September 24-25. In the Rorian Calendar this corresponds to Sext, 6:00 P.M.: the Welsh Tide of Gwechwydd. We write three with a broken line above two solid lines (0-1-1). This is the trigram of the LAKE (“Tui”), appropriate as T-E Scorpio is another water sign: the still, incubating water of Lakes and Ponds, ruled by interregnal Pluto or restoration Neptune. Scorpio is the Scorpion/Water Serpent or the Eagle, and the home of our Demiurge the Turquoise Fowler (Tarot’s Empress), the Lady of the Lake. She is the upholder of Life. T-E Scorpio is the female navel center of the Divine Human. The Lake’s color is green-blue, or turquoise. (Alternatively, we might assign this point to Pluto and our Monadic King, the Christos, ruler of the male solar-plexus center of the Divine Human.)

Four (1-0-0): MOUNTAIN
Moving our left foot up and to the left, across from our right foot, we place four in the East at Mid-Spring Equinox, the Celtic Alban Eilin, between T-E Aries and T-E Taurus; ca. March 22-23. In the Rorian Calendar this corresponds to Matins, 6:00 A.M.: the Welsh Tide of Bore. We write four with a solid line above two broken lines (1-0-0). This is the trigram of the MOUNTAIN (“Ken”), appropriate as T-E Taurus is an earth sign: the massive earth of hills, tors and mountains, ruled by interregnal Venus (as in the Venusberg), or by restoration Lunar North Node, or Persephone. Taurus is the Cow or the Bull, and the home of our Demiurge the Red-Orange Diviner or Abbess (Tarot’s High Priestess), Lady of the Mountain. She is the upholder of the treasures of Love. T-E Taurus is the female heart center of the Divine Human. The Mountain’s color is red-orange, rosy, or russet. (Alternatively, we might assign this point to the Earth itself and our Monadic Queen, the Magdalen, the female solar-plexus center of the Divine Human.)

Five (1-0-1): SUMMER
Moving our right foot up and somewhat inwards, we place five in the Southwest at Mid-Lammas, 15 degrees T-E Virgo; ca. August 8-10. In the Rorian Calendar this corresponds to Tierce, 3:00 P.M.: the Wesh Tide of Echwydd. We write five with a solid line at top and bottom, and a broken line in the middle (1-0-1). This is the trigram of the SUMMER (“Li”), appropriate as Mid-Lammas is midway between Summer Solstice (conventionally the start of summer) and Fall Equinox (conventionally the start of fall): hence, in the hottest part of summer. Virgo is another earth sign, ruled by interregnal Mercury, or by restoration Lunar South Node or Isis. Virgo is the Virgin and Harvest-Maid, and is the home of our Demiurge the Yellow-Green Enchantress. She is the female throat center of the Divine Human. The Summer’s color is jade or green-gold.

Six (1-1-0): WIND
Moving our left foot up and somewhat inwards to align with our right foot, we place six in the Southeast at Mid-May, 15 degrees T-E Gemini; ca. May 6-8. In the Rorian Calendar this corresponds to Lauds, 9:00 A.M.: the Welsh Tide of Anterth. We write six with two solid lines above a broken line (1-1-0). This is the trigram of the WIND (“Sun”), appropriate as T-E Gemini is an air sign, ruled by Mercury. Gemini is the Twins, and is the home of our Demiurge the Orange Mage, the Poet and Namer, whose magical voice is the wind.¬† He is the male throat center of the Divine Human. The Wind’s color is orange.

Seven (1-1-1): HEAVEN
Finishing with our right foot at the top center, we place seven in the South at the Mid-Summer Solstice, the Celtic Alban Hevin, between T-E Cancer and T-E Leo; ca. June 22-23. In the Rorian Calendar this corresponds to Prime, Noontide: the Welsh Tide of Nawn. We write seven with three solid lines (1-1-1). This is the trigram of HEAVEN (“Chi’en”), and is the head or crown chakra of the Divine Human, ruled by our Monad Metatron, the Heavenly Father. Heaven’s color is white.¬† By taking the eight trigrams in their numerical sequence, we trace a zigzag or helical path running through the various chakras from Earth up to Heaven; we can call this the I-Ching Path of Ascension. From Earth (0) the path runs diagonally up and right to Thunder (1), then horizontally left to the Deep (2), then diagonally up and right to Lake (3), then horizontally left to Mountain (4), then diagonally up and right to Summer (5), then horizontally left to Wind (6), and finally diagonally up and right to Heaven (7). We now have both an external or exoteric sequence around the Wheel of the Day or Year, and an internal or esoteric sequence of Ascension up through the Chakras from Earth to Heaven.

The 64 I-CHING HEXAGRAMS and the INITIATIONS
We now connect each Trigram point on the wheel to itself and then out to the seven other Trigrams around the wheel, giving eight aspects or vectors from each Trigram. These eight aspects are the point of conjunction (0 degrees; the Trigram to itself), the waxing semisquare or octile (45 degrees forward; the Trigram to the subsequent Trigram around the wheel), the waxing square (90 degrees forward; the Trigram to the second subsequent Trigram), the waxing sesquisquare or trioctile (135 degrees forward; the Trigram to the third subsequent Trigram), the opposition or complementarity (180 degrees; the Trigram to the fourth subsequent Trigram, diametrically across the wheel), the waning sesquisquare or trioctile (225 degrees forward or 135 degrees backward; the Trigram to the third prior Trigram), the waning square (270 degrees forward or 90 degrees backward; the Trigram to the second prior Trigram), and the waning semisquare or octile (315 degrees forward or 45 degrees backward; the Trigram to the first prior Trigram). By tracing all eight vectors or aspects for all eight Trigrams, we obtain a pattern of 64 vectors. We can easily describe and enumerate each vector by combining its two Trigram end-points into a single Hexagram of six lines. Each Hexagram is one of the first 64 numbers (0-63) written in binary code (base two). These 64 Hexagrams apparently correlate closely to the 64 Initiations of Ascension; please see also Initiations of Ascension & Incarnation.
