We light the fourth of the seven visible candles in the Lyre Crown of the Yellow-Green Enchanter. This is the time for celebrating the Flowers of the Atmic Enchanter (Artemisia, Rue, etc.).

At this time the Enchanter (Isis) displays the new Loaf, as the restored body (penis) of the Blue Planter (Osiris). A loaf is baked with an orange Grain in it and shared among the older men; the one finding the Grain is chosen Magician, and dressed in Orange. The Magician then passes a loaf containing a small blue musical score (the Aeolian Mode) out among the boys. The boy receiving the slice with the Aeolian Mode becomes the Epiphany Child and is robed in Blue, representing the newly-reborn Blue Planter. The Planter is now 15 days old, symbolically 15 years old (“I have appointed thee each day for a year”), and in primordial times the grain would be the first seed of the newly mature man; this First Seed might be shown the congregation in a Holy Communion (“This is My Body…”). When a man first gave seed he was able to join the Garden as a Postulant.

Today one should take special care to see and celebrate the Sun at 3:00 p.m. (“Tierce”): Mid-Lammas would be 3:00 p.m., if the Year were a single Day. This part of Lammas is also the time of the tug-of-war between Planter and Mage; Mid-Lammas is precisely midway between the middle of the Realms of the Planter and of the Mage.

A Poet-Mage came from the East, His glory for to try,

And He did speak a solemn oath: John Barleycorn must die:

He scattered John and ploughed Him in, laid clods upon his head,

And raised the May pole on His grave, John Barleycorn is dead.

So there John lay for a full fortnight, while the dew on him did fall,

Then Barleycorn rose up again, and that surprised them all.

There He did stand through Midsummer, and looked both pale and wan,

John Barleycorn then got a beard, and so became a man.

At Lammastide the Maiden came to sing Him home again,

She gathered the seed and showed Him round, that precious newborn grain.

John Barleycorn’s the choicest grain, on table or in pail,

His body and His blood became our barley cakes and ale.

“Crying the Neck:” As was done a fortnight ago, the Mage-Poet or Master of the Harvest has His neck adorned with choice orange fruit, flowers, and grains. All the celebrants form a ring, and the Master walks in and out through the others to the music until they sing the line, “I am the Maister (or May-Star, Maiia-Star, Mage-Star, or Magister).” Then He stops, taps the shoulders of the nearest celebrant, who follows Him, and they continue until all are following the Master. All celebrants tap the shoulders of the celebrant in front when the second verse is sung:

The diviner’s rod, used to manifest underground water (wells, springs) and hidden wealth, is made of a forked Hazel twig: because the Hazel-Tree inaugurates the Epiphany or manifestation of the Forestress: the Well-Woman and Dark Mother of mercantile prosperity.

The harvest flail is made of two woods: the staff of Ash (Forestress Tree) and the swingle of [Holly or] Hazel (Enchantress Tree), thus incorporating both Bright and Dark Mother.

We celebrate this holiday by making a wine punch (and bobbing for plums?); the girl choosing the violet-red Hypo-Aeolian Mode (or plum) from the punch is chosen Epiphany Queen and robed in Magenta to represent the Forester, born a fortnight ago. Now everyone may wear something Violet-Red, in honor of the Forester.

Fifteen days is the symbolic equivalent of fifteen years (“I have appointed thee each day for a year”); and this Epiphany of the Magenta is also the First Blood of the mature Woman; in primordial times, the First Blood might be shown at a Holy Communion (“This is My Blood…”). This is the time the Enchanter or Virgin Mother displays the Ale or Wine or Mead, in the Ash-tree cup, as the restored Body and Blood of the Reborn Forester.

Sing Lammas, Late Lammas all over the town,

The Cup it is white and the Ale it is brown,

The Cup it is made of the good Ashen Tree,

And our Beer it is made of the finest Barley.

To you good Lammas!
